One essential tip in paediatric physiotherapy is to start early. Early intervention can make a significant difference in a child's progress and overall well-being.

There doesn't seem to be much support or advice out there on how to help with your child's physical and sensory development early on.

Tips for new babies:

  • Spend lots of time on the floor on a comfy mat or rug during awake times.

  • Spend time in lots of different positions e.g. lying on back, lying on side and on tummy.

  • Vary the arm you feed baby with and turn their cot around regularly in your bedroom, this is to encourage head turning to both sides.

  • Complete tummy time little and often throughout the day, it doesn't have to be on the floor, it can be on your chest or over your leg!

  • If your baby is struggling to tolerate tummy time, speak to your health visitor, it could be a sign of reflux or a cow's milk protein allergy.

What to avoid:

  • Avoid use of jumparoos and baby walkers, they do not help with baby's development and may have a negative impact on their hip development and foot position!

  • Avoid use of bouncer chairs or other seats for long periods during the day, remember floor time is best!

  • Avoid becoming stressed when completing tummy time, it's difficult to see your baby struggle but it's hard work learning to lift your head up! Try and be patient, it will get easier the more your baby practices.
